The presenters Bernie and Ruben display a number of phenomena such as an ice cube in a beaker of oil and water and ask their panel of experts (Einstein, Pythagoras and The Thinker)to identify what they have seen.

Properties of liquids, familiarity with the states of water, some familiarity with solubility and mixtures.

Suggestions for using this resource

  1. to develop students (Year 6) skills in comparing observations and data to predictions, in sharing ideas and in discussing possible explanations. (Students do the experiment and then watch the video).
  2. with Year 7 students to develop an understanding of the properties of mixtures such as solutions and suspensions and to develop their skill in distinguishing between them.
