Curriculum strands

Contributing to a plan for investigating an environmental issue, such as salinity and its causes. [S6-8SIS2]; Science has led to changes in the way people live and its applications both influence and can be influenced by personal and community choices…such as the way we value and use water for agriculture. [S6– 8SHE2]; Australian scientists have made a significant contribution to understanding the ecology of and managing river systems and related wetlands. [S6-10SHE4]; Geological features and their role in establishing and sustaining ecosystem. [S8SU5]; Green roofs provide a new way of managing heat exchange and changing rainfall patterns caused by global warming. [S9SU4]

Assumed prior learning

Location of the Murray-Darling river system, the Lower Lakes and Coorong wetlands; what is meant by a catchment area; the relationships between drought and the water cycle; basic knowledge of the ways rivers are managed in Eastern Australia to provide water for irrigation; familiarity with the terms wetlands, acid soils and salinity.

Suggestions for using this resource

Suggestions for using the resource…

  1. as a context for students in Year 6 to experience the discovery of information related to science (eg salinity, acid sulfate soils) using audio material from the Internet
  2. as a source of names of Australian scientists for students in Yrs 6 – 8 to search the Internet for information about their science backgrounds and the organizations they work for.
  3. as an information source for students in Year 6 - 8 to devise a strategy for collecting data about a scientific phenomenon and to possibly use this data to conduct an investigation of the problems of salinity.

by students in Year 8 to research a spectacular Australian landform such as the world
